Lithium battery spontaneously combusts on flight from Hangzhou in China to Seoul, no injuries reported

HANGZHOU, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- A lithium battery spontaneously combusted on a flight from Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province to Seoul in the Republic of Korea on Saturday. The crew handled the situation immediately and no injuries have been reported.

After the flight took off from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport at 9:47 a.m., a lithium battery stored in a passenger's carry-on luggage in an overhead bin spontaneously combusted.

Subsequent to the crew's handling of the incident, the plane was diverted to Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 11:05 a.m. to ensure flight safety. Air China, which operated the flight, arranged for another aircraft to continue the scheduled journey.
