BANGKOK -- Thailand recorded 2,680 new COVID-19 cases and 35 more deaths on Wednesday, as the country accelerated its nationwide vaccination campaign to combat the recent outbreak of the pandemic.

Of the new infections, 11 were imported cases and 2,669 were local transmissions, the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said. (Thailand-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- Over 400 firms in Japan went bankrupt in May as the country continues to grapple with a fourth wave of COVID-19 infections with restrictions on business operations and public movement amid a third state of emergency, a credit research firm said Wednesday.

According to Teikoku Databank, 461 companies holding debts of at least 10 million yen (91,400 U.S. dollars) filed for bankruptcy in the recording period. (Japan-Firms-Bankruptcy)

HONG KONG -- The government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Wednesday welcomed a report of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that reaffirms Hong Kong's position as an international financial center with a resilient financial system, sound macroeconomic and prudential policies, and robust regulatory and supervisory frameworks.

SEOUL -- South Korea's revised figure for real gross domestic product (GDP), adjusted for inflation, grew 1.7 percent in the first quarter from the previous quarter, central bank data showed Wednesday.

The growth rate was up 0.1 percentage point from the preliminary reading unveiled in late April, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK). (S.Korea-GDP)

SYDNEY -- The two-week lockdown of Melbourne, the second most populous city of Australia, will end on Thursday midnight as the state recorded only one new confirmed case of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
