SEOUL, May 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of the information and communications technology (ICT) products logged the biggest April figure due to a recovery in global demand, a government report showed Monday.

The ICT export amounted to 17.06 billion U.S. dollars in April, up 32.6 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

It was bigger than any April figure, topping the previous high of 17.03 billion dollars tallied in April 2018.

The ICT shipment continued to rise for 11 straight months since June last year, marking the fastest expansion in 11 years since April 2010.

The daily average ICT export, which excludes the working-day effect, soared 21.6 percent in April on a yearly basis.

Global demand continued to recover for locally-made ICT products, after slumping in the first half of last year amid an economic downturn from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ICT export to China jumped 21.6 percent, and those to the United States and the European Union (EU) advanced 25.2 percent and 36.3 percent each. Shipment to Vietnam surged 67.0 percent, but the figure for Japan slipped 1.4 percent.

Semiconductor export went up 29.4 percent over the year to 9.4 billion dollars in April, and display panel shipment increased 35.1 percent to 1.67 billion dollars. The mobile phone export spiked 89.7 percent to 1.24 billion dollars.

The ICT import expanded 21.5 percent from a year earlier to 10.78 billion dollars in April, sending the trade surplus to 6.28 billion dollars.

Chip import jumped 28.1 percent to 4.68 billion dollars, and inbound shipment for mobile phones, computers and peripherals grew over 10 percent last month.
