BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States, is experiencing a large decline in new COVID-19 cases as vaccination rollout continues, local health authorities said Monday.

The county's Department of Public Health reported 943 new cases of COVID-19 and 21 related deaths in Monday's daily release, pushing its cumulative cases up to 1,181,403 and the death toll to 19,904.

SAO PAULO -- The Brazilian states of Sao Paulo and Bahia on Monday decided to strengthen mobility restrictions on residents to reduce COVID-19 infection rates and the pressure on the hospital system as the country's total cases surpassed 247,000.

Brazil reported 639 more COVID-19-related deaths in the last 24 hours, raising its nationwide death toll to 247,143, the Health Ministry said Monday.

WASHINGTON -- Candles were lit at the White House South Portico at sunset Monday, a day on which the number of Americans who died from COVID-19 broke the staggering record of 500,000.

"That's more lives lost to this virus than any other nation on Earth," U.S. President Joe Biden said as he led a moment of silence accompanied by his wife, Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the second gentleman, Douglas Emhoff.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House Budget Committee on Monday voted to move forward President Joe Biden's 1.9-trillion-U.S.-dollar COVID-19 relief package, setting up a vote in the full House later this week.

The House panel approved the relief package, also known as the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, by a vote of 19-16 largely along party lines.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina registered 5,417 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the national tally to 2,069,751, the health ministry said.

The ministry also reported 163 more deaths from the disease, taking the nationwide death toll to 51,359.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 357 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Monday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 87,681.

The daily caseload was up from 332 in the previous day, but it stayed below 400 for two straight days.

BEIJING -- No new locally transmitted confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported Monday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said Tuesday.

Ten new confirmed cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported on the same day, the commission said.
