BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 559 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Tuesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 76,429.

The daily caseload rose above 500 in 10 days owing to new cluster infections linked to a Christian missionary group in Daejeon, about 160 km south of Seoul, that has a nationwide network.

BEIJING -- Beijing reported four new locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and one asymptomatic infection on Tuesday, the municipal health commission said on Wednesday.

All of the confirmed cases were reported in a residential community in Daxing District, where a number of cases had emerged lately, according to the commission.

GABORONE -- Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) has confirmed the presence of the COVID-19 new variant 501Y.V2 first detected in neighbouring country South Africa.

The BITRI said on Tuesday that it confirmed the new variant in collaboration with the National Health Laboratory through nanopore whole genome sequencing technology.

ADDIS ABABA -- Ethiopia on Tuesday reported 437 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the national tally to 134,569, said the Health Ministry.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country reached 2,075 as of Tuesday evening, after four new deaths were reported, the ministry said.
